The valley of the Rio Douro (‘river of gold’) is striking in its tranquillity – and its rich colours. Fertile hills neatly striped with green vines and silver olive trees are reflected in the mirror-like waters, as are the painted long boats which ply the river, and the region’s tiny, untouched villages of white houses with red roofs. |
Once ruled by the Romans and Moors, Portugal has a glorious and adventurous past, which is clearly seen in its diverse architectural styles, local traditions, extensive beaches, luxurious landscapes and UNESCO World Heritage listed monuments. This walk follows footpaths through the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, easily accessible from Lisbon and filled with colourful castles, palaces and monasteries dating from the 13th century. |
Walk Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela through lesser travelled Portugal on an easier, quieter more rural walk than the busy French Route. Experience a changing landscape, warmth of the local people and the historic towns. |
The ‘winterless’ Algarve promises beaches of fine golden sand, wonderful seafood, picturesque whitewashed villages and amazing vistas from clifftop trails. Explore Lagos, an historic centre of the Portuguese Age of Discoveries and end at Cape Sao Vincente, the western-most point of Continental Europe which used to be the “end of the world”. |
