Your JourneyDay 1 Arrival in Linz, the modern provincial capital where your walking holiday begins. Day 2 Linz - Enns via St Florian (23 km, 7 hrs) Walk through peaceful fields to Olkam. then climb up to one of Austria's largest Baroque abbeys, St Florian. From here it's easy walking with views of the monastery and river to Enns, the oldest town in Austria. Day 3 Enns via Mauthausen to Perg (17 km, 5 hrs) Walk through the flat fertile Machland region then ferry across the river to Mauthausen, place of a notorious Nazi concentration camp. Continue through lovely forest past typical small Austrian villages surrounded by neat cultivated fields to reach the small town of Perg. Day 4 Perg to Grein (17.5 km - 3 hrs) Go by train from Perg to Baumgartenberg to begin today's route to Grein, known as the pearl of the Strudengau region. Arrive Klam with its attractive medieval castle and hike through the hilly, sparsely populated nature area of the Muhlviertal. Descend to Grein. In the historic town centre visit the maritime museum, historic theatre and stroll quaint lanes. Day 5 Grein – Stillensteinklamm gorge - Aumuehle (9 km - 3 hrs) A circuit walk gives an overview of the wild Strudengau region. Continue to the old Giessenbach mill at the entrance to the Stillensteinklamm gorge. End the day on a lovely forest trail to Aumuehle. Day 6 Aumuehle – Bad Kreuzen – Grein (16 km - 5hrs) The highlight today is grand castle fortress of Bad Kreuzen. Follow a hiking trail through the beautiful Wolfsschlucht Gorge and return via the villages of Lehen and Muehlberg to Grein. Day 7 Grein - Vienna Morning free. Board a boat (Saturdays only) for Krems at 12 noon to view the vast vineyards of the beautiful Wachau area of the Danube from the river (approx. 4.5 hrs). From Krems take the train on to Vienna where you will stay in Austria’s charming capital overnight. It is also possible to take the train Grein to Vienna and skip the boat trip. Day 8 Vienna. Walking tour arrangements end after breakfast, or book extra nights to enjoy the sights of this historical capital. TerrainPlenty of undulations of around 100m per day. Distance is approx 17 km per day, 4 – 6 hours. A good level of fitness is required.
