Your JourneyDay 1 Arrive Assisi, and explore the tangle of little alleys and medieval squares, as well as the lives of the Saints Francis and Clare. Day 2 Assisi to Spello (4 hr, 11 km / 6 hr, 17 km) Walk in the footsteps of St Francis to the charming town of Spello. Pass the spring ‘Tre Fontane’ and the abbey of S. Benedetto, walking through woods and olive groves. Spello is a perfect medieval town unchanged for centuries. Day 3 Spello to Bevagna (3 - 4.5 hrs, 13-16.5 km) Leave the hills and descend into the ‘Valle Umbria’ and walk through peaceful countryside to Bevagna. Bevagna keeps its traditions alive with an annual pageant, the Market of the Gaite, at the end of June, when the town is transformed into a medieval market displaying ancient crafts, costume and recreating ancient recipes to bring to life an era of a millennium ago. Day 4 Bevagna to Montefalco (4 hr, 12.5 km) Today olive groves make way for vineyards as you near the hills surrounding Montefalco known for its excellent red wine - Sagrantino. The town is also known as the balcony (‘ringhiera’) of Umbria, because of its beautiful panorama. Day 5 Montefalco to Trevi (4 hr, 14 km) Cross a fertile valley as you head towards Trevi known as the olive oil capital where the mountain slopes are covered with evergreen olive trees. Trevi’s historic centre has a dozen medieval churches. Day 6 Trevi to Campello Alta 4.5 hrs (12.3 kms) From Trevi you will pick up the pilgrimage route, the Way of Saint Francis, which runs from La Verna in Tuscany, crosses Umbria and finishes in Rome. The route will lead you through olive groves and you will have amazing views of the Valle Umbria. Day 7 Campello Alta to Spoleto 5 hrs (17.5kms) Continue on the Way of St Francis to reach lovely medieval Spoleto, renowned for its art and culture, food and wine! Day 8 Arrangements end after breakfast. Extra nights can be booked in Spoleto. TerrainModerate - walks in hilly countryside without too much climbing and descent. The tour starts in the beautiful pilgrims town of Assisi, built against the slopes of Mount Subasio and made famous by the exalted saint, St Francis. Visit typical Umbrian towns with their Etruscan, Roman and Medieval origins. The tour finishes in Spoleto, a very special town with many squares, quaint cobbled streets, Roca (fort) and famous aqueduct, the Ponte del Torri. To equalise the wonderful walks, enjoy Umbrian cuisine rich in local produce such as truffles, ‘cinghiale’ (wild boar), mushrooms, trout, cured meats, pecorini cheese, artichokes and zuchini florets with the full bodied wines of Montefalco.
