Self Guided Tour - 8 Days / 7 Nights

This footloose walking holiday follows panoramic footpaths and quiet mule tracks through olive groves, chestnut woods and vineyards to the centuries old villages of the Cinque Terre.
Clinging precariously to buttresses of rock or on the side of steep ravines, the “Five Lands” are a perfect mixture of landscape and culture.

Your Journey

Day 1

Arrive Santa Margherita di Ligure, Italy.

Day 2 Camogli & Portofino (Walking 6.5km. 1.5 - 2 hrs)

Visit the ancient monastery of San Frattuoso then walk above the shore of Portofino, descending through olive groves and small hamlets with the picturesque harbour in your sights.

Day 3 Rapallo to Monglia (Walking: 18km. 3-5 hrs)

From the sanctuary of Montallegro, high above Rapallo, walk to Chiavari. Overnight at the quaint seaside village of Moneglia.

Day 4 Bonassola to Framura circuit (Walking: up to 18km. 2.5-6 hrs)

Circuit walk past delightful hamlets to Framura and the little fishing town of Deiva Marina. Follow the coastal route back to Moneglia.

Day 5 Moneglia to Monterosso (Walking: 8km. 3.5 hours)

Walk from Levanto with sweeping views of the Cinque Terre Gulf to Monterosso. Wine tasting of local wines.

Day 6 The 'Five Villages'(Walking: up to 20kms. 8.5 hrs)

Visit the beautiful villages of Manarola, Corniglia and Vernazza – all clinging precariously to the rocky shores.

Day 7 Riomaggiore to Portovenere (Walking: 14km. 5.5 hrs)

From Riomaggiore walk through pine and chestnut woods to Portovenere. Enjoy a boat ride back seeing the villages from another perspective.

Day 8

Tour ends after breakfast. There are easy rail connections from Monterosso to La Spezia and Pisa in the south or to Milan and Genoa in the north.

2023: Start any day March – October (July & August not recommended – it is hot & crowded).

Terrain

Moderate to challenging, some steep ascents and descents, steps and rocky terrain; average daily distances 5-14 km, 2-5 hours.

Within easy reach of the Cinque Terre by train is the quintessential Tuscan town of San Gimignano, in the heart of the Tuscan countryside. A three night stay allows time for exploring the medieval town and for walks through the rolling hillsides, vineyards and forests surrounding it. The great 'art' cities of Florence and Siena are within easy reach for a day trip.

Day 1

Arrive San Gimignano.

Day 2

San Gimignano. Meander through the narrow streets and alleys, followed by a circuit walk through the surrounding hills. There are several varieties of famous local wine to sample, namely “Vernaccia”, wild boar and Sergio Dondoli world-famous gelato.

Day 3

Take the local bus to the charming medieval town of Colle di Val d’Elsa and amble back through the characteristic Tuscan landscape to San Gimignano.

Day 4

Arrangements end after breakfast. Extra nights can be added to allow day trips to Siena & Florence.
