Rhine Wander - Mainz to Koblenz

Self Guided 11 Days / 10 Nights OR 8 Days/7 Nights Rudesheim To Koblenz

RHINE WANDER is a walk between Mainz and Koblenz along Germany’s most famous major river among the mountain chains that overlook it. The route features the Rheinsteig Path, nominated Germany’s most beautiful hiking route for its Incredible scenic beauty and culture, plus the UNESCO World Heritage region of the ‘Mittelrheingau’ (Middle Rhine), where there are majestic castles that exude pure Rhine romanticism. Vine-clad hills reach right down to the river and the Rheingau region is known for its delicious Riesling wine, villages of half-timbered houses and quaint wine taverns called ‘Straußenwirtschaften’ that invite you to sample the wine along the way.
The entire walk takes 11 days however it can be shortened to 8 days starting from Rudesheim.

Your Journey

Day 1 Arrive Mainz

Allow time to explore the charming historic centre with its’ carefully restored half-timbered houses and opulent Baroque churches in the charming historic centre.

Day 2 Mainz – Schlangenbad 17 km

Take a boat ride on the Rhine to Wiesbaden and walk the unspoilt river bank and into the Rheingau vineyards to reach the spa town of Schlangenbad.

Day 3: Schlangenbad – Oestrich-Winkel 24 km

The castle ruin of Scharfenstein and the impressive monastery complex of Eberbach are stops along the route to reach the picturesque wine village of Oestrich-Winkel.

Day 4 Oestrich-Winkel - Rudesheim 17km

Folllow the ‘Riesling‘ Way to the vineyard estate Palace Vollrads then on to the pilgrimage destination of Marienthal Monastery. Enjoy extensive views as you walk through neat vines to St. Hildegard abbey. Today’s destination is ancient Rüdesheim, full of quaint wine taverns and half-timbered houses, and where wine has been grown since Roman times.

Day 5 Rudesheim – Lorch 21 km

By cable car, enter the mountains of the Middle Rhine Valley for spectacular panoramas. Walk to Assmanshausen, renowned for its exquisite red wines and the stunning half-timbered houses.

Day 6 Lorch – Dorscheid / Kaub 13 km

Walk hilly mountains to the historic shipping town of Kaub. Be rewarded with fantastic views of the ruin of Castle Nollig, Gutenfels Castle and the impressive toll-castle, Pfalzgrafenstein, situated on an island in the Rhine River.

Day 7 Dorscheid / Kaub - St Goarshausen 19 km

Discover the heart of the Middle Rhine: fabulous views; legendary castles and Loreley Rock, made famous by the song inspired by it. A highlight today is the three-castle-view of Katz, Maus and Rheinfells castles.

Day 8 St Goarshausen - Kamp Bornhofen 21 km

Cross the beautiful Filsener Lay nature reserve and past Liebenstein and Sterrenberg castles to reach the wine-growing area of Kamp Bornhofen.

Day 9 Kamp Bornhofen - Braubach 17 km

Today’s walk is linked by Liebeneck Castle, the Dinkelhold Mills and the impressive Marksburg Castle to reach the wine village of Braubach with its town wall and numerous half-timbered buildings.

Day 10 Braubach - Koblenz 17 km

Today’s walk will be memorable of your Rhine experience: castles; nature reserves; woodland, the Bienhorn Valley and views for miles. The Ruppertsklamm Ravine offers a little adventure before you cross the Rhine on the impressive bridge, Pfaffendorfer Brücke.

Day 11

Arrangements end in Koblenz.

Terrain

Moderate to energetic on mountain paths through woodlands, meadows and vineyards. Sure footedness required for sections on the mountain ridges of the Middle Rhine. Walks are up to 6 hrs per day and distances of 24 km (maximum).
