Self-Guided Tour - 8 Days / 7 Nights

The beautiful Salzkammergut region in Austria has 76 lakes, all with crystal clear water in a mountain world of rich green alps and impressive rock faces. This unguided walking holiday takes us to the spectacular Dachstein Glacier, a World Heritage region and a wonderland for walkers.

Your Journey

Day 1

Arrive Abersee where your walking holiday begins.

Day 2 St. Wolfgang – St. Gilgen (10 km, 3 hrs)

From the picturesque village of St Wolfgang walk through meadows and by streams to the lakeside village of St Gilgen. Option to walk back to Abersee or take the ferry.

Day 3 Schwarzensee – Strobl – Bad Ischl (14km, 4-5 hrs)

Hike to the mountain and lake of Schwarzensee and around the Burglstein mountain then to the delightfully situated lakeside village of Strobl.

Day 4 Bad Ischl

Today is a rest day with some walking options:

Visit the Emperors castle, Café Zauner or the former Hotel Austria, where once upon a time the engagement of Emperor Franz Josef and Elisabeth of Bavaria took place.

Day 5: Bad Ischl to Bad Goisern (9km, 3.5 hrs)

From Bad Ischl you hike towards the small village of Lauffen - the church of Lauffen was once a famous place of pilgrimage. Continue to Weissenbach then along the River Traun to Bad Goisern, part the World Heritage Dachstein area.

Day 6 Bad Goisern – Hallstatt - Bad Goisern (19km, 5 hrs)

Continue onto the pretty village of Hallstatt, along the eastern shore hiking trail, with magnificent views of the Dachstein Glacier. Cross the lake by ferry and take the train back to Bad Goisern.

Day 7 Bad Goisern – Bad Ischl - Abersee (18km, 5 hrs)

Take the bus from Bad Goisern to Bad Ischl, and  take the ‘Elisabeth- Waldweg’ path which leads you to Pfandl. Your final hike leads you to the ‘Blinking Moors' of Abersee.

Day 8

Tour arrangements end after breakfast.

Terrain

Easy to moderate walk on well structured paths. A good level of fitness is required.

Widely regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful cities, World Heritage –listed Salzburg is famous for its postcard-perfect scenery, Hohensalzburg fortress, the compositions of Mozart, and of course –The Sound of Music.
Stay at a comfortable hotel in a peaceful area in the centre of the city, close to the Mirabelle Gardens, the Salzburg Congress, "Kurhaus" or wellness centre, the main railway station and a few minutes walk from sights in the old town of Salzburg with different squares, cafes, restaurants, galleries and shops.
