Camino Primitivo

Self-Guided – Two Stages of 11 and 7 days OR One Stage of 16 Days/15 Nights

This route through Green Asturias and Galicia is one of several other historic trails that were known as the Camino Primitivo. Used by the Asturian King Alfonso ll in 829 on the first pilgrimage from Asturias to Santiago del Compostela, it is a scenic, less busy route from Oviedo through picturesque villages, hilly landscapes dotted with pre-Romanesque churches that combines cultural heritage, folklore and nature.

This itinerary, walked by millions of ‘peregrinos’ over the centuries, reveals the beautiful natural settings, captivating historical monuments, gorgeous rural farmland and authentic friendly villages of Northern Spain. Near Lugo, the Camino Primitivo joins the more popular French route, which is almost entirely paved.

Without a doubt one of the greatest highlights of any Camino are the culinary delights attached to each region where the natural flavours and aromas follow you every step of the way. The deep rooted traditions and rituals combined with simple fresh ingredients is easy to understand why the Camino is a natural provider in first class gastronomic culture.

Gourmet delicacies vary between regions from the rich hearty stews of Asturia made with oak-smoked chorizo, morcilla sausage and fabada beans typically served with warm crusty bread and a glass of local cider to the Galician star tapa - ‘Pulpo Gallego’, octopus, drizzled with olive oil and sweet paprika, polished off with a glass of chilled Albariňo.
We offer the Camino Primitivo in two sections. You can choose to walk just one of the sections or combine them to complete the original way to Santiago.

Highlights include:

  • Oviedo – World Heritage cathedral of the saint Sebastian and many sculptures
  • A countryside of green pastures, rolling hills, backdrop of peaks, Romanesque churches, traditional architecture and medieval villages
  • 3rd Century Roman walls of Lugo
  • Shrine of St James at Santiago de Compostela
